One of the locations for the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 film really struck me as bleak yet so beautiful. I used my impressions of it for my description of the deadly hamak in Huntsman.
Valiant had brought us to the edge of the Dire Wood from the Hamak, a stretch of five miles of flat black rock, riddled with cracks and crevices, one of the last traps that protected the Fortress natives from marauding foreigners.
Throughout history, many an army had been defeated with nary a blow. The Hamak did it for us. An unwary step can mean broken bones at the least, but more often than not death followed from cracked skulls or the weight of a falling horse whose leg had slipped into a hole. All Fortress mounts were trained from colts to traverse the dangerous terrain.
