I did not know that Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella had never been on Broadway. I immediately assumed that the Cinderella staged several years ago at the CCP, which starred Tony and Olivier winner Lea Salonga, was the outcome of a successful Broadway run. Instead, the current run of Cinderella in New York City is being touted with the tag line: “The world’s most treasured fairytale is now on Broadway for the first time ever.”
My sister hypothesized that the Philippines and the rest of Asia may have served as test markets for the Cinderella musical of Rodgers & Hammerstein before bringing it to the Great White Way. There’s credence to this since Disney’s Aladdin, which had its Asian premiere in Meralco on November 2012, will have its New York opening in the spring of 2014.
Thanks to THR for the heads up.
