Aside from receiving the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for the groundbreaking play Angels in America, Tony Kushner has been nominated for his work in the films Munich and Lincoln. On 24 February 2013, I will be rooting for the Angels in America playwright to win the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for the Steven Spielberg film Lincoln. In the meantime, the Writers Guild Awards presented the Lincoln screenwriter with the Paul Selvin Award.
I’m happy and moved to learn that I’ve been selected as this year’s recipient for the Paul Selvin Award,” said Kushner in a news release. “Paul Selvin was a lawyer who worked hard for unions and civil rights. I love unions, especially the WGA; I love lawyers – Lincoln was a lawyer!
Interestingly enough, Tony Kushner’s Oscar nomination may have never happened. In the video below, he reveals how he was on the verge of turning down the project when Steven Spielberg assembled a panel of Lincoln experts from whom he could glean the material that he needed.
