Globe Warning and Termination of Scam Texts (Eye)
On 10 July 2012, I received this SMS twice from a SMART number:
Gud pm. Kamusta? Loadan mo cell ko #0915.xxxxxxx kahit 10lang meron ako importante sasabihen sayo secreto ikaw lang makaka alam nito.
Unfortunately, I was taken in by a much more nicely worded scam text earlier this year wherein I was led to believe that it was a relative based in the US, and, consequently, lost thousands. Yes, I was that stupid. The only thing I could think of that made me susceptible to such a scam was the fact that I was a former OFW and made me empathize more quickly. *sigh*
Anyway, taking a cue from my sister who reported such a scam SMS, I called Globe at 730.1000 on 11 July 2012 to report the text. Dan, the Globe call center agent, informed me that the Globe number will receive a warning SMS from Globe, thus, making sure that I remain anonymous; and, furthermore, if a second person (I’m the first) reports that the same Globe number has been used for the same purpose within the next three months, then that Globe number will be investigated for possible termination. So, if you receive such a SMS, please do consider making the effort to report it. (I’ll also try to report the incident to SMART.)
