Glee Star Lea Michele On Being Told Not Pretty Enough

Glee star Lea Michele is not immune from the casting process of being told that her looks are not right for the role.

I was always told I was too ethnic, or not pretty enough, or too much this or not enough of that. ‘Glee’ was the first [TV series] audition I went on and ['Glee' co-creator] Ryan Murphy was there. After going through the studio and the network, he then told me that he had written it with me in mind.

As actors, our physical appearance can be a constant source of insecurity in the sense that there will always be a niggling worry that how we look can keep us from getting a coveted role.

Although I do try to look my best in auditions, in order not to focus too much on whether I’m pretty enough or whatnot, my main goal is always to be able to say to myself afterward, ‘Whatever happens, it’s not about the acting.’
