Singapore Red Cross Standard First Aid Seminar

I just finished the first of a three day seminar covering Standard First Aid at the Singapore Red Cross Training Centre located at 15 Penang Lane. My instructor is Mr. Danny Toh, who carries a considerable amount of experience under his belt.

Aside from having a Red Cross First Aid certificate at the end as an impetus, two incidents in Singapore have compelled me to think that there is an urgent necessity for taking the seminar.

The Fainting Lady Earlier during the year, while I was riding the MRT, I observed that a lady swayed on her feet even though she was leaning against the train’s wall. Thankfully, the man nearest to her noticed as well, and caught her before she fell to the floor.

When he urgently requested for someone to hit the emergency button, I had no idea what he was talking about. The only emergency buttons that I know of are the ones touted as the things to press when one spots a possible terrorist and/or bomb.

I got out of the train intending to call someone in authority, but, there was no one. When I inquired from the SMRT staff later, I was instructed to hit the aforementioned “terrorist” button, since it’s the fastest way to inform the driver, who in turn will contact the station’s staff, who will then call the medical authorities.

The Unconscious Man A couple of months ago, I was buying some vitamins from the GNC Tiong Bahru Plaza Mall branch when the saleslady stopped talking and looked over my shoulder, horrified.

I turned and there was a woman frantically calling for help as her male companion slumped against the wall with a blank look in his ashen face. Slowly he slid to the floor, before crumpling unconscious.

I was trying to remember my CPR and debating whether to volunteer or not when mall security arrived and, a few minutes later, the man recovered enough to stand and walk about.
