Master Class Manila & The Snoring Man & The Upstaging PA

The Snoring Man Watching Master Class on 30 July 2010, 8pm, at RCBC Theater proved to be a test in concentration. The portly man seated beside me in the loge section turned out to be unappreciative of the play, causing him to doze off intermittently.

Of course, he was totally within his right to do so. However, his droning snores impeded the enjoyment of the play; and, I was totally at a loss as to how to handle the situation. In the absence of a civilized non-embarrassing solution, I did nothing. Suggestions anyone?

The Upstaging PA Cherie Gil, as Maria Callas, decried the fact that people don’t care about the details. Ironically, the PA in charge of the projector, which was located in the loge section, is a perfect example.

He first distracted me when he shuffled noisily towards the projector and plunked himself behind the piece of equipment during the play. He can be easily discerned in the darkness because he was wearing a white sweater and a pair of khaki shorts.

Dissatisfied with this series of disturbances, he proceeded to hunker down to speak into the radio and consulted a clutched script with a mini-flashlight. He did this not only once, but a couple more times during the award winning play.

I’m just thankful that I’m on the third row and not on the same level as this insensitive PA who was upstaging the performance of Cherie Gil as Maria Callas. I tried to find humor in the fact that he was mirroring the maintenance man featured in the play, who did his job with the innocence of ignorance.
