After enjoying myself in the Singapore Lyric Opera production of La Boheme, I took the opportunity for another chance to watch a full length opera with an orchestra, a rarity in the Philippines due to the astronomical costs that accompany such an endeavor.

Ensconced in my restricted view S$15 seat in the Esplanade Theatre on 27 July 2010, there were times when I just leaned back and listened to the music, not bothering to watch the action onstage.

The popular opera featured Nancy Yuen as Pamina, who delighted me with her lyrical voice, while Song Kee Chang as Papageno exasperated and amused the audience with his physical characterization and comedy.

The Magic Flute director Justin Way’s decision to give the Mozart opera an Asian touch made the set and costumes interesting visually, although the Genii blocking of forming a circle around the musical leads with their wings perpetually in danger of smacking the singers in the midst of their solos was a horror to watch.
