Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief in the Central Public Library Singapore

Central Public Library Singapore

Ecstasy is learning that two very long and tall rows of books in the Central Public Library in Singapore are dedicated to the genre of fantasy, which is housed in a large basement that’s devoted to fiction, and finding out that ALL these books are available for borrowing. One of the books that I chose was the Rick Riordan bestseller Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief, which I had already seen as a film.

I must say, the book is much more fun than the Chris Columbus adaptation. I think the major features that were overlooked in the film version are the fun of sleuth work and the thrill of discovery that ensues during the story. It’s basically an adventure with mystery as its backbone. Too much pertinent information was made known at the onset instead of being slowly revealed as the heroes and heroine went through numerous trials and adventures.

The witty tongue in cheek spirit of the book, which has chapter titles such as ‘I Accidentally Vaporize My Maths Teacher’ or ‘I Become Supreme Lord of the Bathroom’ or ‘A God Buys Us Cheeseburgers,’ was almost completely lost, only surfacing intermittently in a few scenes.

It’s a good thing I saw the film first, for if i had read the Percy Jackson series beforehand, I would have been seriously disappointed.
