Short + Sweet Theatre Festival Singapore 2010 Programme 3

Short + Sweet Theatre Singapore 2010 Poster

Through the invite of a Universal Studios co-actor, I learned about the wonderful concept of the Short + Sweet Theatre Festival, which “is the largest ten-minute theatre festival in the world and each year it showcases bite-sized dramatic treats – each less than 10 minutes.”

Short + Sweet is held annually in different cities in Australia, India and Singapore; and, I caught Programme 3 on 23 July 2010 at The Hall in The Arts House in Singapore.

I watched five out of the ten plays featured that night, namely, Gurus, Interview of a Lifetime, Play (with) Misty for Me, The History of St. Paul’s and Thickness of Blood

Although the scripts were obviously well done, I was bothered with the disparity between the writing and the actors and directors chosen for the plays.

A ten minute play encapsulates a moment in the lives of the characters, and requires a certain level of skill and experience from its actors and directors in order to communicate in a short period of time an enormous amount of information. A minute number were up to the challenge, but, the majority were sadly not so.

I am crossing my fingers that my USS co-actor’s play will go well in next week’s Programme 4 as i go back to The Arts House on 28 July 2010 for the Short + Sweet Theatre Festival.
