Cebu Pacific Airport Personnel Asks Me If I’m Pregnant

For my past four Cebu Pacific flights during the period of November 2009 to May 2010 from Manila to Singapore, the usual routine is to present one’s ticket and passport to the airport personnel upon check in. And that’s it.

However, there were out of the blue additional questions on 04 July 2010.

“Ma’am, are you a resident or a worker?”

Since I’m an OFW, I replied, “Worker.”

“Ma’am, this is SOP, but I have to ask if you’re pregnant.”

I didn’t know what to make of such an invasive question. I remembered though from an OFW seminar that pregnancy can be a cause of termination from work in some cases, so I said, “No.” And added, “Bakit mo tinatanong? Hindi naman tinatanong ‘yan dati. (Why are you asking? That wasn’t asked before.)”

“Ma’am, SOP po. Nakakalimutan lang tanungin ng mga kasama ko. Kaya kami napapagalitan. (Ma’am, it’s actually a SOP. But my co-workers forget to ask. So that’s why we’re reprimanded because of it.)”

“Anong mangyayari kung um-oo ako? (What will happen if I say ‘Yes?’)”

“Meron po kayong i-sign. (You will have to sign something.)”

As to what that something was I didn’t bother to ask, but, it’s troubling for some niggling I can’t put my finger on it reason…

What if you just said no? haha..Is it really necessary to ask that question since you undergo some medical exams?
