Letters to Juliet is the charming story of how an English widow went on a romantic journey through Italy to find her long lost love from fifty years ago. The role of Claire was exquisitely played by none other than Vanessa Redgrave herself, and, when she finally meets her Lorenzo, I had a niggling feeling that I knew the actor playing her unforgettable Italian lover.

I made sure to stay for the credits and read the familiar name of Franco Nero, which I felt I should have immediately recognized but couldn’t. Darn! A quick search on the Internet revealed why it was so recognizable. Franco Nero played Lancelot to the Guinevere of Vanessa Redgrave in the film Camelot

What was even more astounding to learn is that the two onscreen lovers are now presently happily married, with a love story rivaling that of Claire and Lorenzo. LA Times recounts the breathtaking story.

In real life, Redgrave and Nero met and fell in love in 1966 on the set of the movie musical “Camelot.” She was playing Guinevere and he was playing the brave knight Lancelot.

They had a son, Carlo Nero, now a director, in 1969. Though they went their separate ways, they always remained close. In 1996, the two rekindled their love affair and married later that year.
