Shakira Performs FIFA Theme Song Waka Waka at 2010 World Cup Celebration Concert

I found myself watching football, otherwise known as soccer, on 10 June 2010. It was a friendly match between Spain and Argentina before the official opening of the FIFA games. When my housemate came home and saw what I was watching on TV, he incredulously teased me, “Are you sick, Lorna?”

With the Philippines’ close affiliation with Spain, my loyalties automatically went to the European country, so my reply to his question was simply, “It’s Spain.”

Admittedly, with a country that’s obsessed with football, and, a housemate who watches soccer games incessantly, I must have caught a little bit of football fever.

With the participation of 32 countries and fans numbering in the hundreds of millions, plus, its occurrence every four years, the World Cup reminds me of the Olympics; but, the fervor definitely reminds me of the basketball games in the Philippines.
