Chicago The Musical 2010 Singapore Run Closes at the Esplanade Theatre

Chicago The Musical 2010 Singapore Billboard on Esplanade Theatre Facade

The 09 May 2010 7pm show of Chicago The Musical at the Esplanade Theatre proved to be a delight as the whole company pushed themselves to a grand finale.

I caught the opening night on 16 April 2010, and, the growth of the cast in the interim, including the ensemble, in the depth of their characterizations was quite apparent. A couple of the male lead actors, Craig McLachlan as Billy Flynn and Damien Bermingham as Amos Hart, had also discovered more comic moments, which they seemed to relish during the musical’s last show in Singapore.

Three actors from opening night made indelible impressions on me; and, they remained strong presences onstage till the very end. D.C. Harlock was still magnificent with his vocal range and charmingly flirtatious Mary Sunshine.

Deone Zanotto in the role of Velma Kelly was in excellent form as well. She was a mesmerizing presence with her certainty of her objectives and blocking onstage, and her crisp clarity with her spoken and singing lines.

And, finally, a tour de force within the ensemble, Velma Kelly understudy Amy Berrisford was positively riveting every time she stepped into the scene, her every movement swathed with sensuality and technique that manages to combine the Bob Fosse trademark and her own unique style that will always have a stamp of its own.
