Why I Am Envious of Your Right to Vote

I was decided on flying back to the Philippines in order to vote on 10 May 2010. I even texted my brother to ask whether we were going to vote where we used to live — Marikina
To my dismay, my brother checked the website with the voters’ list, and he informed me that I had been deemed ineligible due to inactivity. Thus, I cannot vote.
So, since I was not a direct participant, when I did fly back last week, I chatted with friends about their choice for president; and, found out, to my surprise, that a lot of them are not voting for Noynoy Aquino.
I honestly thought everyone I knew was going to vote for him; but, they did offer interesting insights as to why they would not do so, most of them stemming from concerns whether Noynoy had the experience and the ability to carry out his plans. Although they all believed in his good intentions, most were also being pragmatic as to what can and needs to be done within our political system.
Therefore, although I may have an opinion, I cannot exercise my right to vote because I had not safeguarded that right. It is a great tragedy that at a time when I really wanted to vote, I cannot do so.
Thankfully, not all were so careless as I. A friend has sent a SMS saying that while waiting in line to vote, she is taking refuge from the sun by being under a tree, another is still at home getting ready, while my sister-in-law has already voted in her precinct.
May God bless us all and our new president!
