Philippine Embassy Singapore Issues Overseas Employment Certificate with Longer Duration

The Overseas Employment Certificate (OEC) is vital for the smooth departure of OFWs from the NAIA Airport in Manila, especially since it’s now being scrutinized by more than the immigration officials.

Last 04 July 2010, I had to present my OEC to the Cebu Pacific personnel as well upon check in. Aside from proving that one is an OFW, the added benefit of the OEC is that all airport fees are waived.

In 2009, the OEC was only good for three months from the date of issuance. However, in 2010, the period has been lengthened to one year. I learned about it when the Philippine Embassy Singapore staff member asked me how many OECs did I want, and, she assured me that it’s good till the year 2011.

The longer duration, of course, is very welcome because it means less trips to the Philippine Embassy in Singapore, although, I must reiterate that the staff is very efficient and it usually takes less than an hour to acquire the certificates.

Hi emong. I asked my friend who travels all over the world re your question of terminal fees in other countries. Here’s her reply via SMS:

Some countries do charge terminal fees, which includes airport tax, and some don’t. I don’t remember which, but “wealthier” countries or locations like Singapore and Hong Kong don’t charge.

why do we have to pay for the airport tax & terminal fee in the first place? just curious. other airports don’t have these fees, right?

I totally agree with you.. and the tax. The thing is they base it according to your ticket. So if you have a 2-way ticket, they immediately charge you double. Isn’t that taxing?

@rrjm: if you are an ofw and you have all the documents like OEC, you are not required to pay the terminal fee.
