What I Did with Possible Home Robbers

I was in the bathroom at home on 23 March 2010 at 8pm when I suddenly heard insistent knocking on the door. I rushed out, and, to my horror, heard the beginnings of the door being opened. I rushed to the door, heard strange masculine voices from the other side and flung the door open. I recognized the maintenance man, who was accompanied by two other males.

I let them in to inspect the leaking ceiling that I had reported to the administration. And, as they were leaving, I told them very seriously that they had really scared me and that I would be reporting the incident to the office.

After they left, I had a short crying jag to release the adrenaline rush; and then, when I had calmed down, I analyzed my actions. The foremost question was why didn’t I run and hide with the possibility of home robbers? What did my brain process in the span of a couple of seconds?

Bluff It Out I think the fact that possible robbers were knocking first meant that they wanted their target abode to be empty; so, if I showed them that there was somebody in the house, then they would most probably abandon their plans.

Surprise Is On My Side Plus, the element of surprise was still on my side. I could have also slammed the door on a hand or a foot before forcing it to retreat and then closing the door shut.

Screaming My Head Off Sound carries well in the compound as well so after slamming the door, I could have screamed my head off to alert nearby persons, and then rushed to the phone to call the administration.

My friends have chided me about being aggressive and rushing to the door. I think I did so because I didn’t want the situation to escalate to a point where I would feel out of control of the situation. I felt, at that point, I still had some elements under my control that can veer the situation to my advantage. And, I assured everyone that running still remains the number one option.

And, of course, I forcefully requested the Global Residence administration to call first before making unannounced visits to any flat to avoid the predicament of a lone female being frightened needlessly by the possibility of physical violence and psychological distress.
