The Hurt Locker Film Helmed by Female Director

The Hurt Locker didn’t have the overflowing tongue in cheek violence of a Quentin Tarantino film as demonstrated in Kill Bill and Pulp Fiction. The Hurt Locker didn’t have the dramatic sentimentality of a Michael Bay film like Transformers and The Rock. The Hurt Locker didn’t have the slick polish of a James Cameron film as shown in Aliens and Avatar

Instead, The Hurt Locker seethed with restrained emotion, gripping in its relentless account of an Army’s elite Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team’s final weeks in Iraq. The pathos, violence, despair and overwhelming passions were kept in check through the documentary style of filming that slowly revealed the unraveling control of Sergeant First Class William James, superbly played by Jeremy Renner.

I must admit that with the film’s style and subject matter, I assumed that The Hurt Locker was helmed by a male director. Much to my chagrin, I learn that its Oscar and Golden Globe nominated director is Kathryn Bigelow

When Avatar director James Cameron won the Golden Globe for Best Director, he said, ““Frankly, I thought Kathryn was going to get this. She richly deserves it.”

I agree.
