If one has the resources and time, a must in New York City is a trip to the theater to watch Oscar winner Cate Blanchett play Blanche Dubois in A Streetcar Named Desire, which has a limited run from 27 November to 20 December 2009

Claire Prentice of Times Online raves about the respected actress’ performance.

It’s more than 60 years since Tennessee Williams’s A Streetcar Named Desire had its premiere on Broadway. In that time his fragile Southern belle Blanche DuBois has been played by a host of big hitters, including Vivien Leigh, Jessica Tandy, Jessica Lange, Natasha Richardson and Glenn Close. But seldom has an outing of this classic been so eagerly awaited as Liv Ullmann’s Australian production starring Cate Blanchett.

New Yorkers have been scrambling for tickets to the Sydney Theatre Company’s sell-out at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. On opening night they came expecting theatrical dynamite; they weren’t disappointed. The cool, calm, collected Blanchett seems an unlikely choice to play the nervy, neurotic Blanche DuBois. But from the moment she enters the stage until her final devastating exit, the Oscar-winning star captivates the audience with a beautifully nuanced performance.
