Despite his hectic rehearsal schedule, Filipino actor Jake Macapagal kindly acceded to my text request to answer some questions via email regarding his upcoming stint as the leading man in the Zebra Crossing production of Victor Victoria at the Esplanade Theatre in Singapore from 09-29 November 2009. Jake Macapagal will play Chicago gangster King Marchan who falls in love with Victor/Victoria, as essayed by international jazz sensation Laura Fygi.

TBG: How did you get the role of King Marchan in Victor/Victoria?

JM: I was advised by Asha Edmund (my colleague in RENT) to send my CV and photo to Zebra Crossing a year ago [in 2008, and,] then again in the beginning of the year [2009] when they were on search for the leading man to play opposite Laura Fygi. I was asked to audition in person (which I didn’t mind but could not fly out in March to Singapore).Instead I sent my Actor’s Reel via e-mail and was cast and offered the next day by the Producer.

TBG: Are there other Filipinos in the Singaporean production?

JM: YES! There [are other] Pinoys in the cast, [all of them] excellent triple threat dancers, namely:
Filomar Tariao
Andrew Barris
Johnny Amar

TBG: Are you looking forward to the challenge of a particular scene in this classic Broadway musical?

I think coming to rehearsals to discover the character of King Marchan with the luxury of 10 weeks is a challenge but it is my job. Each scene I have on stage presents different colours to his personality. It is a great challenge though when you are given the space to grow in time. It is always a learning experience that is why we love what we do.

This week we are at the main theatre of the Esplanade. And I can breathe now as we re-experience its magic.
