Repertory Philippines Joy Virata Continues Tradition in Sweeney Todd
Whenever someone from the ensemble needed a sharp reminder regarding how important he is to the play, the late Tita Bibot Amador, with a steely voice and gaze, would launch into a lecture that expounds on the themes of “There are no small roles, only small actors,” and “You’re only as strong as your weakest link.”
Today, Tita Joy Virata continues to teach these themes through actions by joining the ensemble of the Repertory Philippines production of Sweeney Todd. Ronald Constantino of Tempo reports:
Not to forget Joy Virata as one of the chorus girls. But isn’t Joy one of the stars and executives of Rep? Why is she playing a minor role? Ms. Virata herself replies: “I want to show the young actors of Rep that onstage no role is too small. Just do it and do it well. Onstage there are no big or small stars, only actors.”
Tita Joy Virata will join the Sweeney Todd cast composed of Audie Gemora, Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo, Robbie Guevarra, Roger Chua, Lena McKenzie, Franco Laurel, Liesl Batucan, Marvin Ong, Juno Henares, Gloria Sicam, Robbie Zialcita, Meynard Peñalosa, Raul Montesa, Cara Barredo, Naths Everett, Olive Usison, Jay Glorioso, Ring Antonio, Jejie Esguerra, Jay Pangilinan, Ronna Guba, James Stacey, Collins Gutierrez, Jejie Esguerra, Hans Eckstein, David Cruz, Teene Chan, Marisse Santos, Gary Junsay.
“Sweeney Todd” play dates are from November 13 to December 13, 2009 with additional matinees on Saturdays and Sundays at Onstage, 2/F Greenbelt 1, Ayala Center Makati City. For ticket inquiries and other information, call Repertory Philippines at 8870710, 8880887 or Ticketworld at 8919999
