Instituto Cervantes Personnel Offered Free Spanish Lessons
As I heaved my bag onto the security X-ray machine, the security guard commented, “Es nuevo (It’s new).”
His observation totally delighted me to the point that I was laughing in appreciation. Previously, we had been greeting each other with “Buenos dias (Good morning)” and “Buenas noches (Good evening)” plus the “Gracias/De nada (Thank you/You’re welcome)” combinations, but, I had no idea that his Spanish went beyond the usual salutations.
My curiosity got the better of me so I asked him if he studied Spanish. It turns out that all Instituto Cervantes employees are offered the Spanish courses for free. He can take all the 28 levels and become a teacher if he wants to. He can also apply for the scholarships that grants educational courses and allowances during a 1-3 month or 1 year stay in Spain to the successful applicants.
Security guard Allan Nieves is so interested in the Spanish language that he has reached level 7, which is equal to 120 hours of lessons. *clapping*
