Hugh Jackman and Daniel Craig Stop Play to Address Mobile Phone User

Hugh Jackman and Daniel Craig halted their Broadway play, A Steady Rain, to address a common problem in the theater — a ringing mobile phone. Hugh Jackman broke the fourth wall, went out of character and addressed his comments to the audience, which elicited laughter and clapping.

Although Hugh Jackman had his reasons for doing so, let me point out that the standard course of action for an actor in the same situation would be to ignore the disturbance and to go on with his stage business. The actor must do his job and trust the ushering staff members to do their job as well, who will most likely confiscate the audience member’s phone, or, in a worst case scenario, request said person to step out of the theater.

But in this case it looks like the Ushers weren’t doing anything to address the problem…

Even at the CCP, the ushers are too shy to approach people who are disturbing the play (experienced this in Cinderella)…

True. That should be ignored. Especially in a middle of a serious scene.
