DFA Slow Processing of Philippine Passports (Ire)

You would think that anything connected to the multi-billion peso industry of remittances from OFWs abroad would merit support from the Philippine government. Yet the facilities of the Department of Foreign Affairs woefully lack the basic comforts and the number of personnel necessary to process passports in a timely manner.

The Poor Facilities The very first step to get a Philippine passport is housed in a basketball court that is open at the sides, making it vulnerable to the elements. On 24 August 2009, the heat of the sun made the long winding lines a sweltering sauna of too many people squeezed into a too small space.

Lack of Personnel Only three windows serviced the hundreds of people waiting in the sweltering basketball court, making everyone, including the DFA personnel, irritable and impatient.

Inside the auditorium where payment and encoding were done, the facilities improved with the provision for air-conditioning. However, even with the increased number of efficient encoders working, the sheer number of applicants made the process a slow one.

A Need for Improvement of Facilities and Increase of Personnel Majority of the people in line, I believe, are applying with the intention to work abroad. Each one has the potential to send millions of pesos back home in the course of his career abroad. I think they should be supported with a better system and facilities to help them start their career.
