Goodbye Tita Cory

I found myself inexplicably getting teary eyed yesterday, 04 August 2009, as I would catch glimpses of people giving their respects to the departed president.

The bank employees of the Bank of the Philippine Islands Cubao branch wore black arm bands as they bustled to and fro. Some of the wait staff of Cibo Gateway Mall wore yellow arm bands as they served the hungry customers. The outside of the Araneta home, fondly called, the White House, had yellow ribbons flying from its gates. A haircut at the Jimmylu Salon was centered on President Cory Aquino and her unprecedented influence on the world.

SM Megamall had its SM flag and the Philippine flag at half-mast. All the newspapers at Fitness First Megamall had the beloved leader on its headlines. Any mention of anything related to her passing on the TV monitors inside Fitness First, from the lobby to the locker rooms, made people gather to listen.

Today, 05 August 2009, was declared a holiday to pave the way for a proper farewell to the former President Cory Aquino

Paalam, Tita Cory…

There is perhaps no better way to celebrate the life of President Corazon “Cory” Aquino than to showcase the gleaming legacy that she has left the Filipino people. With the whole country mourning her passing, Cory’s beacon will remain in the heart of every Filipino long after she has gone.

Cory, The Musical the first stage act to feature the life of the former president, was originally conceptualized by Mrs. Lourdes “Bing” Pimentel as a gift when Mrs. Aquino was diagnosed of colon cancer last year. Come Sunday, August 30, 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. at the AFP Theater, Quezon City, the musical returns to the stage with music by Pimentel, script and direction by Nestor Torre.

Tickets for the August 30 performances are at P500 and P300 for the matinee, and P700 and P500 for the evening show. Tickets available at Ticket World tel. 891-9999. For details call 851-3120.

Torre’s body of work involves a number of critical and commercial successes like Magsimula Ka and Katy. Cory, The Musical assembles a powerhouse cast of the country’s best thespians. Former Miss Saigon, Isay Alvarez is Cory; opera singer Sherwin Sozon is Ninoy Aquino; Ferdinand Marcos is played by Robert Seña; Pinky Marquez is Imelda; and Tommy Abuel the Reporter.
