The Death Vigil for Cory Aquino

When I went to Makati Medical Center on 29 July 2009 at 4.30am, my friend asked me if I had seen the camera equipment, TV crew and reporters outside. I said I didn’t notice anything.

My friend related that President Cory Aquino was on the 9th floor and that the media had been constantly around. I commented that that’s so sad, because, it’s almost like as if they’re on a death vigil.

At 5am on 01 August 2009, Noynoy Aquino, son of President Cory Aquino, made a statement outside the Makati Medical Center

“Our mother peacefully passed away at 3:18 a.m., August 1, 2009, of cardio-respiratory arrest.

“She would have wanted to thank each and every one of you for all the prayers and your continued love and support. It was her wish for all of us to pray for one another and for our country.

“Hinihiling po ng aming pamilya ang kaunting panahon para makasama namin ang aming mahal na ina.

“Later today, we will be announcing further details of her wake para sa lahat ng ating mga minamahal na kababayan na nais magbigay ng respeto sa aming ina. Maraming salamat po.”

(Our family would like to request for some time and privacy so that we may be with our beloved mother. Later today, we will be announcing further details of her wake for all our countrymen who may wish to pay their last respects to our mother. Thank you very much.)

Note: The photo above by Fred Hawson was taken at the public wake for former President Corazon Aquino at the La Salle Greehills Gym on 01 August 2009.

The Office of the Presidency is not the problem. It is the present President, Gloria Arroyo who is the problem. She is the most divisive President we have ever seen.
