Even Lea Salonga Likes to Rehearse

In her weekly column in the Philippine Daily Inquirer, Tony and Olivier Award winner Lea Salonga extolled the virtues of rehearsals.
Rehearse … rehearse … and rehearse. Sounds simple, but it makes a world of difference. I feel very comfortable in performance when I’ve fully rehearsed. It’s helpful to take the time to sing the songs, figure out how to technically place them, note the dimensions of the stage, learn the choreography. It’s great to do sound checks, to make sure the monitors are exactly how you want them, and then maybe a final dress rehearsal to see how your gowns fare with the lighting and the sets.
I’ve seen past TV appearances of myself with that “deer in headlights†look, and promised to never put myself—or an audience—through that again. Call it performance trauma. I’m still haunted.
This is from a theater veteran who is known for her photographic memory and perfect tone. So, when you feel like not attending that rehearsal or thinking that you don’t need to rehearse anymore, maybe you would like to reconsider.
