Top 10 Reasons Why the Ateneo Blue Eagles or De La Salle Green Archers Team is Better than the Other

I watched the Ateneo vs. La Salle round on TV last night, 09 August 2009, which was held at Araneta Coliseum, and, as always, it turned out to be a very exciting basketball game. Now, Spot.ph has taken the match to a battle of fighting words in the blogosphere by listing the Top 10 reasons why each team is better than the other.

Top 10 Reasons why Ateneo is better than La Salle

10. La Salle gets into fights with other schools and their players take cheap shots.

In this instance, after La Salle’s Rico Maierhofer commits a hard foul on University of the East’s Mark Borboran, UE’s Mark Fampulme stands up for his teammate. What escalates the situation is a bench player from DLSU, Brian Ilad, clocking Fampulme with from behind. Real classy move.

9. Ateneo school officials don’t hit opposing basketball players.

During the 2005 UAAP Finals, a heated exchange occurred between the Far Eastern University Tamaraws and the Green Archers. One would usually expect the action to be between players from the opposing teams. However, DLSU assistant team manager Manny Salgado snuck from behind FEU’s superstar Arwin Santos and hit him with a closed fist. Cheap shot is an understatement.

Top 10 Reasons why La Salle is Better than Ateneo

10. La Salle is known for their dreaded full court press. Ateneo is known for… Chris Tiu.

Ever since Franz Pumaren took over coaching duties in La Salle in 1998, the squad has been known for their full court press. Even 2002 Ateneo head coach Joel Banal admitted to having nightmares because of DLSU’s press. Ateneo isn’t known for any kind of play. Just Chris Tiu.

9. La Salle sticks to the 4-year limit of student players in the UAAP. Ateneo let Chris Tiu (among others) stay another extra year.

Ryan Arana, Mark Cardona, Joseph Yeo, and Rico Maierhoffer all graduated when they were supposed to and moved to the PBA. LA Tenorio, Ford Arao, Wesley Gonzales, Doug Kramer, and Chris Tiu all opted to stay one more year just to play in the UAAP. Can you say “terminal”?

Thanks to Arvin Ello for the heads up. And, as an interesting tidbit, theatre luminary Lea Salonga was clear about who she was rooting for in her twitter account.

Lea Salonga was a freshman at Ateneo when she had to leave for Ms. Saigon in London.
