Repertory Philippines The Fantasticks 2009 with PJ Valerio & Julia Abueva

Repertory Philippines has chosen for its 2009 production of The Fantasticks two promising theatre actors to essay the famous roles of the pseudo star crossed lovers Matt and Luisa — PJ Valerio and Julia Abueva
The Philippine theatrical institution is known for discovering and honing talented actors who end up being on the international stage, a prime example being the Ms. Saigon talents for the West End production, headed by Tony and Olivier Award winner Lea Salonga
PJ Valerio and Julia Abueva do have theatre credits tucked under their belt, but, are nevertheless “thrilled” to be part of a Repertory Philippines tradition that has staged this classic musical with Philippine theatre luminaries, including Artistic Director Baby Barredo
The other members of the cast are Jake Macapagal (Narrator/El Gallo); Jaime del Mundo (The Boy’s Father/Hucklebee); Dido de la Paz (The Girl’s Father/Bellomy); Miguel Faustmann (The Old Actor/Henry); Red Concepcion (The Man Who Dies/Mortimer); and PJ Rebullida (The Mute).
“The Fantasticks,†with book and lyrics by Tom Jones and music by Harvey Schmidt; based on Edmond Rostand’s “Les Romanesques,†runs 03 – 26 July 26 Onstage Theater, 2/F, Greenbelt 1. For ticket inquiries or show-buying opportunities, call 8870710

Altar Boyz Manila Reviews
I don’t feel like watching this. I feel it has a very heavy story line.
But, you can prove me if I’m wrong.
Hi Lorna. Watched this show last night. Sharing my review: http://3xhcch.multiply.com/photos/album/94
sometimes her voice is good and sometimes its bad
I saw this on its last weekend while visiting Manila. PJ Valerio looked like a clumsy 13 year old rather than an ambitious 19 year old with the world at his feet. Julia Abueva has a good enough voice but tended to border on melodramatic.
Jake Macapagal did a decent enough job as Gallo although he faltered a bit vocally on a couple of songs.
PJ was dependable in his role as the Mute, weaving in and out of hte scenes. the set was adequate although i didn’t quite get the usefulness of the projectors because the projection got lost in the lighting except in one scene of flowers and leaves.
Miguel Faustmann was awesome although I mistook him for Jaime Fabregas in the first 5 minutes of his stage entrance. Red Concepcion as Mortimer was funny although his creative decisions were the usual ones in Philippine acting (the comic over the top gay sidekick).
The wonders of the night belonged to the two dads. Jaime and Dido presented enough humanity in their respective roles without being too human. For me, it appeared that the whole play anchored around them.
