MRT Cancels 24/7 Operates 20/7 Instead

MRT 24/7 Sign at MRT Cubao - Araneta Center Station - 02 June 2009

When I took a picture of the MRT 24/7 sign at the MRT Cubao – Araneta Center Station on 02 June 2009, I didn’t realize how fortuitous it would be since a few hours later MRT authorities will make an announcement of the cancellation of the MRT 24/7 service.

GMA News interviews a representative from the MRT Corp.

Sophia Martin, public information officer of the MRT Corp, told GMANews.TV over the phone that starting Wednesday, their train operations would end at 12:01 a.m. and only resume four hours later, at 4 a.m.

The four hours that the MRT coaches would not be running will be allotted for maintenance works, which had been “suffering” ever since the MRT went 24/7 last Monday [01 June 2009].

The 30-minute interval of train arrivals remain, according to Martin. “Mag-i-i-start po kasi kaagad ang maintenance as early as 11 p.m. so kailangan naming i-maintain ang 30-minute waiting time,” she said.

The MRT management observed during the two-day pilot run that around 3,000 passengers board the MRT between 11 p.m. and 12 midnight.
