How I Became A Pedicab Action Heroine
I found myself approximately four feet diagonally front of the pedicab that I was riding on 23 May 2009 on my way to the Virgin Labfest 5 auditions at the Cultural Center of the Philippines. Looking back, I tried to examine how I ended up in the position of lying on my side on the four lane street of Vito Cruz in Manila.
The Bump The first clues that I had regarding a potential problem was a sudden loud exclamation and a bump on the driver’s side. And then I felt the pedicab tilt to the right.
The Leap I think that when I felt that the pedicab might land on its side, I used the forward momentum to increase the length of the leap that I took through the open entrance.
The Dance Training I think that I instinctively used my dance training to twist in the air, tuck my elbows in and land on the muscle that runs from the buttocks to the side of the thigh, thus, just scraping my knuckles a little bit when I finally descended on the graveled road. (Surprisingly, I didn’t get any broken skin or a bruise on my butt after.)
The Gym Apparently, going to the gym might have assisted in my recovery because I was able to stand immediately after the fall.
The Show Must Go On The theatre training came in handy next because I urged the pedicab driver to continue the trip to the CCP, because I did have an audition, and, nothing comes in the way of the show cum audition.
I dissuaded him from plunging into a heated discussion with the bicycle rider who had suddenly crossed our path, and, unfortunately, miscalculated the distance, thus, hitting us.
No Motorcycle In hindsight, I was very thankful that there were NO vehicles in front or to the back of the pedicab, because, even though I might have been able to leap out, a motorcycle trying to miss the sudden mishap could have easily injured me instead. Argh! (Or, I might have continued the action heroine routine by rolling away from the danger. LOL)
I feel like patting myself on the back and saying, ‘Good job, Lorna!’
Oh, and just in case you have no idea what a pedicab is, here’s a picture.
