I Auditioned for Virgin Labfest 5

I was horrible. Specifically, my Filipino is horrible. I know I can do conversational Filipino, which is what is required of me during TV shoots, but, my Filipino plays are numbered. Just two, in fact.

One was the Filipino translation of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night or Ikalabindalawang Gabi, a comedy that turned into a dirge in the brilliant hands of translator and director Rolando Tinio, and, the second one is the recently concluded Kung Paano Maghiwalay, written and directed by Palanca award winner George de Jesus.

Knowing my Filipino is a weakness from non-usage, my friend and I attempted to brush up by reading the translation of Rolando Tinio of Shakespeare’s Hamlet and Kung Paano Maghiwalay.

However, it was definitely not enough, as the Virgin Labfest 5 audition’s first script befuddled me with words I had never heard of, while the second one tripped my tongue. Argh! Only the third script was manageable. My apologies to the panel, and thank you for your patience with me.

And, finally, a worthy endeavor for the coming year is to read more Filipino books. For the moment, I’ll bring along the copy of Hamlet until it becomes dog-eared from too much reading.

I have a soft copies of the Filipino version of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream (also a translation by Rolando Tinio, but it has typos nga lang) and Chris Martinez’ Last Order Sa Penguin that I could email for you to read as well. Some parts of the latter play make good monologues. =)

That would be great, Hogi! Thanks! :-D

I auditioned too! What number were you?

The Chris Martinez plays available in bookstores (Last Order sa Penguin and Welcome to Interstar) would be good practice nga siguro as Hogi suggested. Plus, they’re really good reads! Get a copy of 10×10x10 of The Writers Bloc rin from the UST press.

Hope everything turns out well with VLF5! Sayang, I won’t be able to catch it na.

And, thanks for the tip, David! I’ll check it out! :-)

Wow! Umabot pala ng ganun kataas yung no. Anong pinakamataas na no. na nakita mo? I was supposed to be no.1 pero nahiya akong mauna. Medyo nagpahuli na ako para rin makapulot ng mga tips and advice. I was no.18! Patani was there too! She was no.16! She was with 2 other fresh talents of GMA. They were all nice.^_^
