Disney’s First Afro-American Princess Tiana

Maybe inspired by President Obama’s call for “change,” Disney will be debuting its very first Afro-American princess through the animated film The Princess and the Frog

The new Disney princess has been christened with the name of Princess Tiana, and she follows in the non-traditional footsteps of other Disney princesses such as Mulan and Pocahontas.

However, when it comes to Princess Tiana and her friends’ creation, Disney animators will be going back to the traditional way of creating cartoons — through drawing.

Movies Online reports that the Little Mermaid and Aladdin creators will be at the helm, while talk show queen Oprah has been tapped to be one of the voice talents.

The Princess and the Frog is due to be released this year — 2009
