Lea Salonga Comments on A Portrait of the Artist as Filipino

Lea Salonga watched the Repertory Philippines production of A Portrait of the Artist as Filipino on 31 January 2009. She kindly shared her thoughts right after the play.

As she mentions in the video above, and in her Inquirer column, Backstory, Lea Salonga writes, “I must say the most enjoyable part for me was the end—the party to celebrate the Feast of La Naval. It tickled me pink to see Ms Baby Barredo onstage again. From what I was told, director Jose Mari Avellana gave her (and the other actors sharing the scene with her, including Ernie Zarate and a very resonant Chinggoy Alonso) license to ad lib to their hearts’ content. Well, they did—enough to bring needed levity, but not too much to overshadow the story being told thus far.”

Thank you to Gibbs Cadiz (seated on her right) for mentioning to Lea Salonga that I was TheBachelorGirl, which reminded her of our Hairspray Manila interview.

A Portrait of the Artist as Filipino is on its final weekend at OnStage Theater till 08 February 2009. For tickets, please call Ticketworld at 891.9999 or Repertory Philippines at 887.0710
