Terminator Salvation Actor Christian Bale Rants on Set

When your Director of Photography fixes the lights while you’re doing a scene, I think it is only logical to assume that he wants to make the shot better.
However, Terminator Salvation actor Christian Bale completely blows his top and goes into a three minute and a half tirade that’s completely uncalled for, in my opinion. Here is a portion of his venomous rant.
Am I gonna f***ing rip your lights down in the middle of the scene? Then why the f***are you walking right through, ‘Duh-duh-duh-duh-duh,’ in the background,†the man said to be Bale, sing-songs. “What the f*** is it with you? What the f*** don’t you understand? Hey, it’s f***ing distracting having somebody walking up behind Bryce [Dallas Howard] in the middle of the f***ing scene!

To his credit, Director of Photography Shane Hurlbut kept his cool and even tried to apologize to the furious actor to calm him down.
As actors, what can be learned from this? Please note that a DP is a demi-god on the film set. As an actor, he is your “best friend” because, together with the film director, the DP will be choosing every frame and angle that you will appear in.
Oftentimes, it has been pointed out that the difference between theater and film is the transfer of control of the actor’s performance from the actor to the film’s director, director of photography and editor. So these artists are the deciding factors of your final performance.
I think it is critical to be professional consistently. And, not just in your dealings with the “powerful people,” but also to every crew member, staff, makeup artist, production assistant, driver, etc.
In short, everybody deserves a level of courtesy and respect as human beings.
