Chuckles — Casper the Friendly Ghost aka Aang the Avatar

When Aliw Award nominee Liesl Batucan spotted my keychain with a picture card, she enthusiastically said, “Oh, that’s so nice.”

And then, looking more closely at the character beside me on the image, she curiously asked, “Who’s that?”

I asked her to guess, and, seeing the bald headed Aang the Avatar of Nickelodeon, she brightly replied, “Casper the Friendly Ghost.”

I giggled at the mistaken notion of the adventurous Aang The Last Airbender being the fluffy Casper the Friendly Ghost, and, introduced her to the arrow tattooed hero.

But, no wonder Liesl Batucan was not acquainted with the courageous Nick favorite, since she has been busily tackling roles that range from classic Broadway musicals to Shakespearean to comedies. Liesl has appeared as “Maria in “The Sound of Music”, Portia in Shakespeare’s “The Merchant of Venice”, Theda Blau in the hilarious two-actor romantic comedy “It Had To Be You”, Luisa in the longest running Off-Broadway musical “The Fantasticks”, Audrey in “Little Shop of Horrors”, Beauty in the children’s classic tale “Beauty and the Beast” and many others.”

For her next acting challenge, Liesl Batucan will be portraying the role of Paula Marasigan in the Nick Joaquin classic Portrait of the Artist as Filipino. Renowned actor-director Jose Mari Avellana will direct the Repertory Philippines production. The play will run at OnStage Theater from 16 January till 08 February 2009.
