Some Kind of Wonderful Actor Makes Directorial Debut

I first saw Mary Stuart Masterson in a 1987 film called Some Kind of Wonderful, which got a short rerun at HBO Asia recently, and I marveled again at her acting, which was quietly compelling and mesmerizing as tomboyish Watts, who is secretly in love with her best bud, played by Eric Stoltz.

From then on, I would see Mary Stuart Masterson sporadically in films such as Fried Green Tomatoes and Bad Girls with Madeleine Stowe, Andie MacDowell and Drew Barrymore.

Twenty years later, and, I learn, with great pleasure, that Mary Stuart Masterson has decided to become a director, making her debut with an indie film entitled The Cake Eaters.

Variety praises her initial effort, “Mary Stuart Masterson brings the same directness and vulnerability that imbue her acting to her quietly impressive directorial debut, “Cake Eaters,” transforming tyro scripter Jayce Bartok’s somewhat shopworn, sentimental family drama into a vibrant, unpretentious small-town tale. Rural upstate New York settings have a homey look that adds greatly to pic’s unforced authenticity, as does thesping by Aaron Stanford, Bruce Dern and Elizabeth Ashley. A dynamite perf by Kristen Stewart in a potentially hokey, girl-with-a-disease role further destroys the clichés.”
