Tuesdays with Morrie Manila Reviews
Bong Austero of Manila Standard Today has a copy of his review on his blog Out of My Mind, wherein he deems Tuesdays with Morrie as “moving but not absorbing enough,” but does concede, “This I will say without hesitation: Avellana’s performance is worth the price of admission. He makes you forget that the play feels contrived in many places.”
Walter Ang of Click the City observes the same thing, “The revelation of this production is the actor who plays Morrie: Jose Mari Avellana. He has incredible presence onstage and lends much gravitas to the character. His performance is nuanced, gentle, funny, powerful and heart wrenching.”
Senior Editor Jocelyn Dimaculangan of Summit Media’s Philippine Entertainment Portal similarly enthuses, “From start to finish, Jose Mari Avellana will certainly capture the fancy of the audience. With his classic dance steps, his witty one-liners, and his convincing portrayal of a person suffering from tremors, Jose Mari portrays Morrie with sensitivity and a sense of humor that injects life into an otherwise serious play.”
Anton Diaz of Our Awesome Planet makes a surprising admission, “Rache (Anton’s wife) cried a lot during the show and she was surprised that I also cried.”
Although some tissue might be required, Rache Diaz of Mrs. Awesome Planet notes that, “But it also made me laugh…several times.”
On the other hand, you might find yourself nodding off to sleep like Spanky Enriquez of Manila Boy, who related, “And while 90% of the people watching the excellent staging of Tuesdays With Morrie by Repertory Philippines last Friday night were completely absorbed by the drama, I was falling asleep, and actually nodded off at least twice.”

I agree with all the praise Mr. Jose Mari Avellana has been receiving for his riveting performance. It was poignant, without being excessively maudlin. My own review: http://3xhcch.multiply.com/journal/item/157
