SMART Bro vs Globe Price for Portable Modem

The SMART Bro ad regarding its portable modem with its nationwide coverage fired my imagination. I can bring my laptop to Palawan while on vacation, or to any God forsaken set location that still has a SMART signal. But, first, I must find out if my Mac is eligible.

SMART Gateway Mall Since there was no SMART portable modem I could test on my Mac, I requested the customer sales agent if any one among the technical staff can verify that the SMART Bro works on my Mac. She kindly brought my laptop to the staff member concerned.

While I waited, I confirmed that the requirements for a SMART Bro application are: a Government Issued ID, Proof of Address and a Financial Document (Income Tax Return, Current Bank Statement or Bank Certification Letter).

When the sales agent returned, the utterly disappointing news from the technical department was that the SMART Bro currently does not work on the Mac, which implies that I shouldn’t apply. Aaargh!!!

Globe Ali Mall Then I remembered my sister mentioning that Globe also has the same product, albeit pricier. I figured that an estimated increase of Php 500 would still be acceptable.

However, it’s NOT Php 500 higher. It’s a jaw dropping Php 2,201 higher!!!

The Great Price Difference

SMART Bro — Php 799/mo
Globe — Php 3,000/mo

The Waiting Game Guess I’ll be checking with SMART every 3-6 months whether they’ve upgraded. However, I will keep in mind the negative experiences of The Jester in Exile

Too bad about that. I was also curious about this product. But I also have an iBook. I hope they could make it compatible for the Mac soon!

I wonder how much it would be if I am already a Smart Bro subscriber now? Would it just be an upgrade or something?

Hi TheBachelorGirl, randomly dropped by your site. It’s very informative. :)

To Fred, it’s 799 a month, limited to 40 hours. In excess of that, every 30 minutes will be charged P10 to your account. Alas, there’s no upgrade. I asked if that was possible, but no, it’s a separate account from any existing SmartBro accounts you may have.

I am on Mac and Smart Bro plugit is working on my MacBook, the problem is that I keep on disconnecting at time and that BLOCK OF 30 minutes … hurts my pocket …

GLOBE has unlimited … I would recommend it than the smart plug-it.

Anyway, you could use your phone as modem for that … I have used my N90 before and installed the nokia suite and connect to internet through it :)

Oops! The Globe option is out of the budget. :-( Thanks for the info though. At the moment, I chose PLDT DSL for an additional Php 399 to my monthly phone bill. :-)

smart plug-it will work on mac. you just have to install the smart modem on a windows pc first. Once registered, you may now use your MAC desktop/laptop to access the internet and manage your Smart BRO Prepaid account.
but globe visibility would be my choice. it may be out of the budget but it’ll give you smooth surfing on the net with their 1MB bandwidth speed.
try looking for a home-based job. since you can bring your laptop anywhere, you could bring your “job” anywhere too! XD can you imagine how fun it is to have Starbucks as your office? *_____*
if you need help on home-based jobs, contact me.
im a web/graphic designer and that’s how i have my globe visibility paid. XD

I should point out that if you already have a Smart or Globe SIM card (whether pre-paid or line) you absolutely do not need Smart Bro 799 in any way, shape or form.

Both Smart and Globe offer HSDPA surfing with their sims for a price of 10php/30 minutes and 5php/15min respectively (more or less same, Globe is slightly better for the smaller increments).

You can simply just buy a USB Modem (cost about 3,000-4,000php) or better yet just buy a 3G celphone . Almost any 3G celphone is capable of doing the exact same thing the USB modem does — get a 3G/HSDPA internet signal and connect it to your PC — and the celphones can do it either by USB or Bluetooth if you don’t like wires. You can get a cheap 3G celphone for around 4,000, less if 2nd hand. For starters you can try the LG KU250 or the Nokia 6151.

I personally use a Samsung Blackjack on a Globe 350 plan (ancient, I know) and whenever I get the itch to go online I can surf on it (the Blackjack itself) or connect it to my laptop using a USB cable, all for 5 bucks for 15 minutes.

Sun also offers something similar for about 9php/30min but I am not sure if it works with every Sun SIM.
