Hairspray Broadway Ends on 04 January 2009
After 2,641 performances and 31 previews, the 19th longest running show on Broadway history will close on 04 January 2009.
Hairspray made a major sweep during the Tony awards and won eight Tonys, including Best Musical, Best Score, Best Book of a Musical, Best Direction, Best Actor in a Musical, Best Actress in a Musical, Best Featured Actor in a Musical, and Best Costume Design.
According to the Hairspray website, Tony Best Actor in a Musical Harvey Fierstein will reprise his award winning role as Edna Turnblad and will perform during the show’s last eight weeks, as well as close the show on Broadway.
Tony and Grammy award winning composer of Hairspray Marc Shaiman has admitted to crying profusely, but kept his spirits up by telling the producers, “The sooner we close, the sooner the revival!”
