Chuckles — A KFC Moment at West Side Story Manila
(Warning: Spoilers ahead.) After my brother and his wife watched West Side Story on 11 October 2008 at the Meralco Theater, my sister and I chatted with them regarding their experience, who did they like, etc.
I was particularly curious about the last scene, because, on opening night, the audience laughed a couple of times during the tragic scene. I recounted that when Tony was wailing about what he believed was the death of Maria, the audience couldn’t help laughing when Maria appeared onstage, setting up a classic comic scenario of a character being alive with another believing that he’s not.
The other part that the audience found humorous on opening night was the lift of Tony after his death, with both the Jets and Sharks carrying him offstage in a crucifix like pose.
My sister-in-law said there was no laughter during the last Saturday night performance, but a man did exclaim when Tony got shot.
“Anong klaseng sound ang ginawa niya (What kind of sound did he make)?” my sister tried to clarify.
“Yung parang gulat na gulat siya sa nangyari. Hindi niya in-expect na mamatay si Tony. (I think he was shocked that Tony got shot. His death was totally unexpected for him.)”
My sister teased, “Ay, nag-KFC siya (Oh, he did a KFC)!”
We all laughed at the allusion to a Kentucky Fried Chicken Shrimp Surfers commercial where a character gave a high pitched exclamation of surprise when he saw the new unexpected product from KFC. Watch the YouTube video below:
