While waiting at the lobby for the house to open, we tried to encourage the kids to show off their martial arts skills or their ability to sing tunes from the film version of Disney’s Mulan. Some excitedly obliged, while some were too shy to even speak.

Nevertheless, once inside the darkened theater, the relatively full house of kids and adults at OnStage Greenbelt during the 1.30pm show on 16 August 2008 was swept into the powerful story of the legendary Mulan.

Winners of the Win FREE Tickets to Disney’s Mulan Jr. contest, Sharline Bareng and Lynn Trixy Villegas, were also there to happily watch from Orchestra Side.

A group of orphans and girls from Holy Family Home, which is managed by the Franciscan sisters, was accompanied by volunteer group Hands on Manila, while Crane Goddess Corporation sponsored their tickets.

At the end of the show, four lucky winners received an autographed copy of the recently published book about parenting — Mom’s A Stewardess by Angelica Viloria.

For the 16 August 2008 1.30pm show, the lovely Cris Villonco brought Mulan to life, while the dashing Reuben Uy played Captain Shang, and the energetic Chevy Mercado did Mushu. Disney’s Mulan Jr. is directed by Joy Virata for Repertory Philippines.

Thanks again everybody! May you bloom in adversity…

    Hi Trixy,

You’re very welcome! Thanks again for coming and for leaving a comment. Sorry, I couldn’t find a photo of the two of you. :-( But, I’m glad he won a prize. There’s another raffle going on that I didn’t know about. ;-)

Hi Lorna! Thanks for the mention here and for the photos in the video. Thanks again for allowing me to raffle off copies of the book during your show. Thanks also for inviting us. By the way, “blooming in adversity” seems to be a favorite of yours. Any particular reason? Just curious.

You’re very welcome. Regarding your questions re the “blooming in adversity” line, it comes from MULAN. We started a tradition of coming up with a trademark line for each play that we invest in. For Avenue Q it was Spread the Fuzz. For Mulan, I thought this was one of the more poignant lines, so, whenever possible, I use the famous line in any Mulan related correspondence and posts. :-)
