I watch Rep’s Childrens’ Theater fairly often and I have to say I really enjoyed Mulan, Jr. Except the sets, I thought they were flat. But other than that, it was great.

To address Fred’s disappointment at the song Reflection. This was the arrangement given to us by Disney. Mulan, Jr. is the stage version of Mulan adapted for children. We are bound by contract to stick to this version. As for the key change, the version of Mulan, Jr. starts in a higher key than the movie to accommodate the ancestors when they sing but it goes back to the same key that Lea sang in the movie when she sings the chorus. Yes, there was a shift to a lower key because if it didn’t, it would be way too high. Just thought I’d clarify that for the readers of this blog. I understand though why some may be disappointed. Their arrangement of “Reflection” is a bit odd and disappointing. First, why was the chorus joining Mulan in the first verse? Then, Mulan goes a key lower when she sang the chorus! They should have stuck to the movie version since this song is the most familiar with viewers among the Mulan songs. My own humble opinion only of course, based on this video.
