A Sneak Peek at Disney’s Mulan Jr.
Three seasoned Rep female actors will be alternating in the role of Mulan in the Repertory Philippines production of Disney’s Mulan Jr., namely, Cris Villonco, Caisa Borromeo and Cara Barredo.
Cara Barredo, who is the niece of Rep director and actor ‘Tita’ Baby Barredo, humbly follows in her famous aunt’s footsteps and proudly continues the family theatre tradition. Cara can be seen in the video above singing the well loved song Reflection, which was sung in Mulan’s animated film version by an actor whose beginnings are deeply rooted in Rep — Lea Salonga.
At my request, internet writers and bloggers were invited for a sneak peek by attending a run through rehearsal on 04 and 07 August 2008 at OnStage Greenbelt. Here are their posts (to be updated as posts are published):

Their arrangement of “Reflection” is a bit odd and disappointing. First, why was the chorus joining Mulan in the first verse? Then, Mulan goes a key lower when she sang the chorus! They should have stuck to the movie version since this song is the most familiar with viewers among the Mulan songs. My own humble opinion only of course, based on this video.
To address Fred’s disappointment at the song Reflection. This was the arrangement given to us by Disney. Mulan, Jr. is the stage version of Mulan adapted for children. We are bound by contract to stick to this version. As for the key change, the version of Mulan, Jr. starts in a higher key than the movie to accommodate the ancestors when they sing but it goes back to the same key that Lea sang in the movie when she sings the chorus. Yes, there was a shift to a lower key because if it didn’t, it would be way too high. Just thought I’d clarify that for the readers of this blog. I understand though why some may be disappointed. Cheers!
Thank you Rem for your clarification! And thank you Lorna.
I watch Rep’s Childrens’ Theater fairly often and I have to say I really enjoyed Mulan, Jr. Except the sets, I thought they were flat. But other than that, it was great.
