First Dance Rehearsal of West Side Story Manila

(foreground) James Laforteza with West Side Story Manila CastLet Me Dance The probability of anyone staging West Side Story again in Manila is pretty low to nonexistent, so I asked permission from STAGES President Audie Gemora whether I could join dance rehearsals so that I could experience, even just once, dancing the choreography of the legendary Jerome Robbins.

Dance Rehearsal for Cool Number On 01 July 2008, I went to Gold’s Gym in Glorietta and joined the Jets in learning the choreography for ‘Cool.’ This is the song and dance number that shows how the Jets react after their gang leader, Riff, is killed.

The Thrill of the Dance Restaging the famous choreography of Jerome Robbins for the West Side Story Manila production is James Laforteza, who ably led the young cast through the difficult dance number.

I was absolutely thrilled to dance the steps of Jerome Robbins for the female Jet members, and, I would have loved to try out the male gang members’ choreography, but I knew my strength wasn’t up to par with its demands. Nevertheless, I can’t help being ecstatic for the opportunity to have experienced a legend…

    Haha! Nahiya na ako when somebody took video, because I was basically a ’saling pusa’ lang, so I sat it out. ;-)
