Lea Salonga Supports West Side Story Manila

Recently, Lea Salonga showed her support for the West Side Story Manila production by dropping by to visit during the music rehearsals of the West Side Story Manila cast with the FilharmoniKa orchestra headed by her brother Gerard Salonga.
While she was there, Lea chatted with West Side Story Manila director Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo, with whom she shares strong ties with because of their Repertory Philippines roots, and Joanna Ampil, whose West End credits mirrors that of Lea Salonga’s Broadway career.
Furthermore, in her Philippine Daily Inquirer Backstory column, Lea Salonga admitted to shameless plugging as she writes, “On Sept. 5, West Side Story opens in Manila. It stars Christian Bautista as Tony, and Joanna Ampil (in her Manila musical theater debut) and Karylle as Maria. Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo directs… so flock to the Meralco Theater! Don’t miss it! Oh yeah, FILharmoniKA will be playing, conducted by Gerard Salonga.”

Cinderella, of course, refers to Lea Salonga, who played Cinderella in the recently concluded Cinderella Manila run, while the Tres Marias or three Marias, are director Maria Carmen or Menchu, and the two ladies playing Maria, namely, Joanna Ampil and Karylle.
