The Kung Fu Panda Audition of Sam Concepcion

One February afternoon at the Stages office, Mrs. Concepcion walked in with Sam. I had just finished a project meeting, so the conversation turned to the “What’s up?” question. When Mrs. Concepcion revealed that she and Sam had just finished recording the audition song for Kung Fu Panda, I couldn’t help squealing in delight.

I had seen the trailer of Kung Fu Panda in the cinema, so I immediately discussed with Sam the fact that I was totally charmed by the outlandish concept. If there are martial arts styles such as the Tiger, the Praying Mantis, the Monkey, the Japanese Crane, then there can be room for the Panda¦

Hihi! The thought of the lumbering panda kicking and hurtling itself at its enemies can only leave room for a lot of physical comedy. I can only hope that the Dreamworks animated film will be as much fun as its premise.

And, after having worked with the talented and dedicated teenager, I really hoped last February 2008 that Sam Concepcion would get approved by DreamWorks, but even I didn’t know that that afternoon’s Kung Fu Panda audition would turn out to be such a great break for him.

I didn’t know that if he had been approved, it would mean his initial foray in the international scene via his inclusion in the film’s soundtrack, or that he would be the first local singer to work with Hollywood based DreamWorks. All I was thinking of was that singing for Kung Fu Panda sounded like a lot of fun.

Break a leg and have loads of fun, Sam!
