West Side Story Manila Dance Auditions
If you’re a member of a cheer dancing squad, a school based dance club, a ballet school or a professional dance group, then you’re invited to audition for the Tony award winning musical West Side Story on 27 April 2008 from 6 to 10 p.m. at Steps Dance Studio, Bldg. C Karrivin Plaza, Pasong Tamo Extension, Makati City.
West Side Story Manila director Audie Gemora, who himself starred as Bernardo in the Repertory Philippines production of West Side Story, laments, “It seems that today’s youth are more into street dancing. Looking for dancers with a jazz background is like finding a needle in a haystack. We need young people, especially males, who can dance.”
Set in New York City, West Side Story is a re-telling of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. An American youth gang, known as the Jets, is in a bitter turf war against Puerto Rican youngsters, called the Sharks. Conflict is heightened when Tony, a Jet, falls in love with Maria, the only sister of the Sharks’ leader, Bernardo.
West Side Story Manila will star Asia’s pop idol Christian Bautista as Tony.
The YouTube video above shows the prologue of West Side Story, and is an excellent example of how Broadway director and choreographer Jerome Robbins’ vision for West Side Story has changed the landscape of American musical theatre.
Those who pass the dance auditions must expect to complete an intensive four-month training period in order to execute the celebrated choreography of Jerome Robbins for the September to October run of West Side Story Manila.
