An Invite for Bloggers to Compare La Boheme and Rent

Philippine Opera Company La Boheme Poster

In Paris, Mimi and Rodolfo fall in love, but Mimi is very sick and on the verge of death. Nevertheless, Rodolfo vows his true love for Mimi before she dies.

Sounds slightly familiar? Maybe because you’ve heard of two other characters whose names are Mimi and Roger who are from New York, but whose story ends more happily.

The first storyline is from Giacomo Puccini’s La Boheme, which premiered in 1896, while the second refers to the Tony award winning musical RENT, which opened 100 years later on Broadway in the year 1996.

And, therein lies the “fun” of this invite. I suggested to Karla Gutierrez of the Philippine Opera Company that fans of Rent might enjoy watching the precursor and the basis of their favorite musical. Karla is very excited about the idea and has kindly allowed me to extend the invitation to all RENT fans.

The Philippine Opera Company is allowing a behind the scenes look into the La Boheme rehearsals.

Date: 01 October 2008
Time: 8pm
Venue: Main Theater of the CCP (Cultural Center of the Philippines)

The only request is to publish a post about your thoughts on La Boheme by 03 October 2008 12nn (since the La Boheme run is from 03-05 October 2008).

If interested, please leave a comment and fill in the boxes with your full name, a valid email address and a link to your blog. I’ll send a reminder email on Monday 29 Sept 2008. Thank you very much!

….all i can say is philippines la boheme must do something a ‘bit’ further different to ’spice’ a new international boheme but asian if not ‘filipino’ blood styles by using ‘pananaghuy’ filipinos ‘unique’ opera styles while using filipinos unique ‘artistic’ body movement styles called ‘padulas”pasulong’{slide & glide}filipino ‘exotic-sexy’ body movements instead of just moving walking changing changing around in a non artistic way filipinos can ‘further’ push it into an ’state of the art’ filipino styles flairness-sexiness called SOCIAL FINNESSE but new modern filipiniana style characters as in ALMOST NO VULNERABILITIES BUT SOMETIMES SHY COULD BE TIMID but will take any leads if necessary if nature asked for the situations lol!….also the sliding & glidings of the bodies must be OBVIOUSLY ARTISTIC to accents to ‘pressed’ that HUGE state of the art UNIQUELY filipina movements
that will make asia ‘STAND OUT’ IN WORLD OPERAS WITHOUT A DOUBT….good luck jennifer philippines la boheme players & thank you….

  11. TheBachelorGirl on September 24th, 2008

Hi, Cleverland. Thanks for dropping by.

Yes, the La Boheme run is on 03-05 Oct, that’s why I’m asking the bloggers, with the permission of Philippine Opera Company’s Karla Gutierrez, to come on 01 Oct so that their articles will be published BEFORE the run so that people can read them and consider watching the opera.

    Thank you for understanding. :-)

    hi lorna,

i’m a huge RENT fan…just wondering, why are the Orchestra center and side tix more expensive on opening night Oct. 3rd vs. Oct. 4-5?

    Peter
(i bought AveQ tix from you last time)

  25. TheBachelorGirl on September 24th, 2008

Hi Peter. Thanks so much for buying the Avenue Q tickets for the Spread the Fuzz show.

Regarding the price difference, prices are always at the discretion of the producer. Opening nights may command a higher price because these occasions are usually the world premiere of a creative piece of work such as this particular version of La Boheme.

Another reason may be because opening night is meant to benefit a foundation or charitable institution.

I think it’s an excellent question to ask Karla next week. :-)

  26. Marie Mortel on September 24th, 2008

    I would be delighted to watch… :)

  30. ron dolotina on September 27th, 2008

I’m interested as well. I have seen the Karajan production on DVD starring Mirella Freni as Mimi. Will the opera be performed in the original Italian? Also, which orchestra will accompany the performance and who is the conductor?

  31. TheBachelorGirl on September 27th, 2008

Hi Ron. Yes, the opera will be in Italian. Sharing the stage is an 80-piece orchestra to be performed by the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra, under the baton of international conductor Helen Quach.

  32. Karen Manalastas on September 27th, 2008

I am interested in seeing this. Please include me in the body count. =)

Does the review have to be a comparison with Rent, or can it be solely about La Boheme? Thanks.

  33. TheBachelorGirl on September 28th, 2008

Hi, Karen. The comparison with Rent is just a peg since most people are familiar with the musical. You may write your review any way you like. Thank you. :-)

    Hello!

I’m not a Rent fan, though occasionally ran into a couple of members of the original Broadway cast in my apartment building’s laundry room in Hell’s Kitchen.

Would we be allowed to take pictures (no flash, of course)? I’d love to do a photo essay.

    Cheers!
