The Importance of Having a Foreign Server

The Killer Blog A Giibs Cadiz post pointed to the existence of, in a nutshell, a killer blog penned by an Australian by the name of Brian Gorrell, whose Filipino lover, DJ Montano, allegedly ran away with his life savings. The objective of the blog is to get his money back.

Dropping and Smearing Names Left and Right What makes it so titillating for people to read is the fact that the blog lays bare to the scrutinizing eyes of all and sundry the behind the doors lives of Manila’s elite, and Brian Gorrell names names and posts pictures to boot.

From Bodily Harm Threats to Log In Problems Brian Gorrell writes that he has received threats that promise to have his privates cut off to having his animals killed. Moreover, he experienced problems logging on to his Yahoo address for four days.

Brian Gorrell’s Location When Brian Gorrell created a new email address, he gave this warning, “This is a secure Australian line. If this address gets tampered with. The police will be called. It is a big crime in Australia to tamper with communications.”

Furthermore, Brian Gorrell proclaimed triumphantly, “I am in Australia. And your Consular officials have NO AUTHORITY to close my blog,” implying that an attempt has been made.

Server Location Brian Gorrell’s situation is an excellent example of how location can be a major factor regarding freedom of speech.

Sadly, if you stir up a hornet’s nest, and your server is based in the Philippines or you are physically here in the country, there will be a higher probability that your blog will be shut down, as what happened with Boy Bastos

Ask a Lawyer and Write Courageously Not that it should stop you from writing what you want, but, if you have any questions, it would be best to ask a lawyer first just to make sure you’re covered before publishing that post.
